Angry mob sets ablaze police vehicles after accident

Chandigarh : Two Haryana Police vehicles were set on fire by an agitated mob in Panchkula town adjoining Chandigarh late Friday evening after a teenaged girl was crushed under a jeep.

The residents were venting their anger on the local police who arrived late at an accident spot.

The 15-year-old girl was killed when a Scorpio jeep being driven rashly hit her near Sector 12 of Panchkula.

Eyewitnesses said that they had informed the police about the accident but the police vehicles reached late. The girl succumbed to her injuries while being taken to hospital.

Another accident took place in the vicinity of the area a few minutes later which infuriated people even more. Four persons were injured in the second accident.

The agitated residents, who gathered at the spot, set on fire two police control room (PCR) Gypsys that arrived at the spot later. They damaged a few other vehicles too.

The district police rushed reinforcements to control the mob. The police had to cane charge the mob to bring matters under control.
