New Delhi : A head constable Saturday reportedly threatened to commit suicide here after he was "disappointed" over the non-appointment of Kiran Bedi, one of India's most respected police officers, who lost the race for Delhi's new police commissioner's post to Y.S. Dadwal.
According to sources, Sanjeev Kumar, 42, was detained and taken to the I.P. Estate police station after he sat in front of police headquarters and threatened to immolate himself.
Kumar is presently posted at the district investigations unit in south Delhi.
However, Delhi Police spokesman Rajan Bhagat denied the report and declared the head constable 'mentally unfit'.
"He had come to the police headquarters at around 11.00 a.m. to complain about other officials. He wanted to meet the commissioner without a prior appointment," Bhagat said.
"Before he could meet the commissioner, he started abusing other officials and was immediately detained. He didn't try to immolate himself and no kerosene was recovered from him," Bhagat added.
According to Bhagat, the head constable was tense for some time after a departmental inquiry was ordered against him.
Dadwal was appointed Delhi's police commissioner Wednesday, following which Kiran Bedi had charged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with committing "injustice" by overlooking her and picking "someone junior" as Delhi's new police chief.
Bedi, a 1972-batch Indian Police Service officer, is two years senior to Dadwal.
