Security cover around Akal Takht head Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti and Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar – both senior-most leaders of the Sikh religion – has been beefed up.

The two leaders received a letter saying they had failed to take strong action against Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh after he portrayed himself like 10th Sikh guru Gobind Singh.

The letter warned that if action was not taken by the Sikh leadership against the dera chief by Aug 15, Vedanti and Makkar should be ready to face the consequences.

"We are keeping an alert around these leaders. Security has been beefed up around them," Amritsar district police chief Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh said.

Vedanti and Makkar dismissed the death threat as of no consequence.

"I don't give any importance to this threat. I am a devout Sikh and do not get afraid by such threats," Vedanti said here Saturday.

Various Sikh leaders and organisations have criticised the threat.
