A goalless yet entertaining game late Saturday night could not be settled in the regulation 90 minutes and Niko Kranjcar scored the decisive spot-kick to ensure Pompey's triumph after goalkeeper David James had saved the spot kicks by from Fernando Torres and Yossi Benayoun.

Utaka had dragged Portsmouth's first penalty well wide of Caludio Reina's right-hand post to give Liverpool the early advantage in the shoot-out.

Earlier, Fulham claimed third place with a comfortable 4-1 win over South China, the Hong Kong FA Cup holders who showed plenty of endeavour but lacked real quality against their illustrious Premiership opponents.
