Baghdad : Cheered by the national football team's first ever win of the Asian Cup Sunday evening, Iraqi President Jalal Al-Talabani granted each player USD 10,000.
The president congratulated the team on beating the Saudi peer in the final game of the championship, according to a statement issued by TaLabani's office.
Each Iraqi player in the final match will be awarded USD 10,000, while Yunis Mahmoud who scored the single goal of the match will have double the figure.
The wonderful performance of the Iraqi footballers and their win in the final match cheered all Iraqis and brought them around to their national flag, the statement said.
The president hailed as historic the results of the final game of the Asia Cup and urged the Iraqi sports people to score more achievements.
Meanwhile, Iraqi Vice President Tareq Al-Hashemi said: "While politics wreak havoc on the country, the patriotic footballers played their role to strengthen the national unity."
"We stick to our hope for a united peaceful and independent Iraq where all citizens coexist harmoniously," Al-Hashemi added.
