Judge Anisur Rahman Khan in western Jhenidah district handed down the death sentence to Matin Mehedi who claims to be the chief of the outlawed Party of Allah.

Witnesses said Mehedi was unmoved as Khan read out the judgement in a crowded courtroom late Wednesday.

Mehedi was arrested in the northern Kurigram district in April.

In March, six Islamic militants were hanged for their role in the orchestrated bombings across the country on 17 August 2005.

Among those executed was Shaek Abdur Rahman, the founder of the Jamiatul Mujahideen, which has called for an Islamic state in Muslim majority Bangladesh.
