"We have arrested the duo under various charges of criminal offence and further investigation into the matter is underway," said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (south district) S.S. Manan.

Sandhya Prabhakar, 40, and her friend, Madhuri Devi, 26, were arrested late Friday evening for reportedly assaulting a retired army colonel S.S. Chibber and his wife with sharp blades following a heated exchange of words outside their Kalkaji residence in south Delhi.

The elderly couple sustained minor injuries in the scuffle but were released after being examined by doctors.

Sandhya, who lives in same building where the elderly couple stays, attacked them following a complaint of power theft made against her by the couple a few months ago, the police said.

The elderly couple alleged that Sandhya had tampered with their electricity consumption meter and was continuously stealing power for the past seven months. In fact they also complained to New Delhi Power Ltd (NDPS), a private power distribution company, to fix their meters.

On Friday, acting on their complaint, the NDPS staff discontinued power supply to Sandhya's residence from the couple's meter. Sandhya was also served a notice regarding power theft.

"Following the notice, Sandhya went to their house with Madhuri and attacked the colonel and his wife. There was initially a heated exchange of words and the duo attacked the couple with sharp blades," said Manan.

Sandhya got married to the former all-rounder in 1986. However, the couple has been living separately for the past two years.
