Punjab to encourage community radio stations

By IANS

Chandigarh : The nascent movement to set up community radio stations (CRS) to bring communities together and highlight the common man's concerns will receive a boost in Punjab as the state government has decided to encourage entrepreneurs in launching the service.

The proposed service will focus on issues relating to education, health, environment, agriculture, rural and community development, a state government spokesman said here Monday.

Individuals, political parties and their affiliate organisations, profit-making bodies and other organisations banned by central or state governments will not be eligible for the new service.

The permission for launching a CRS will be for five years and will be non-transferable.

The preferred language will be Punjabi. Those running the new service for religious programmes will have to ensure that religious sensibilities of people from other religions are not hurt by the content of their programmes.

The new service will be on a free-to-air basis but will not be allowed to interfere with services of FM stations that have been granted licences.
