"We have received some general information that Al Qaeda and Taliban militants are planning attacks on foreign missions, offices of non-governmental organisations and citizens of the United Kingdom and United States," said ministry spokesman Brigadier Javed Cheema.

He did not mention the source of his information, but local media reports said that Pakistani intelligence agencies warned of potential strikes in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore in a recent report submitted to the ministry.

Police authorities in the four provinces of the country have been directed to carry out regular searches of areas housing British and US installations and to monitor religious schools, hotels and guesthouses, the Daily Times newspaper reported.
