Paramaribo (Suriname) : Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi has praised the efforts of the Indian community in Suriname to preserve their culture and tradition.
The minister was in Suriname to attend the India Arrival Day celebrations Monday, organised by the Global Organization of Persons of Indian Origin (GOPIO). People of Indian origin constitute 37 percent of Suriname's total population of about 470,000.
Ravi appreciated the role played by the community to Suriname's development while keeping alive their link to Indian culture.
Speaking with businessmen of Indian origin at the Lalla Rookh Foundation here, Ravi asked the Indians to explore areas for greater trade and investment with India in sectors like energy, mining, agriculture and IT.
