NDA must support UPA-Left candidate for president: PM

New Delhi : Maintaining that a decision on the presidential candidate will be taken soon by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday said the opposition should support that candidate.

"The next president will be a nominee of UPA-Left parties' alliance. As to who that person will be, I think discussions are going on," the prime minister told journalists on his way back from Germany where he attended the G8 Outreach Summit.

"I think discussions are still not complete. You will hear about it when the decision is taken," he said.

Manmohan Singh also said that when incumbent A.P.J Kalam's candidature came up five years ago, his Congress party had supported him for the president's post.

"The (NDA) National Democratic Alliance must support the UPA-Left candidate."
