About 200 Taliban insurgents launched an attack on the centre of Murghab district at 4 p.m. (1130 GMT) Saturday, provincial police chief Mohammad Ayub Niazyar said.

During the conflict, which lasted over 10 hours, three policemen were also injured.

The insurgents had been driven away, and the district centre was calm now, Niazyar said.

Taliban spokesman Yousuf Ahmadi claimed three policemen were captured during the clash, adding the Taliban set on fire the district's main administrative buildings.

Rising Taliban-linked insurgency has resulted in the deaths of over 1,900 people, mostly militants, in Afghanistan this year.
