Fourth death in Tihar in five days

New Delhi : A 30-year-old inmate of the capital's high-security Tihar Jail died Monday, taking the death toll of prisoners in the jail to four since Thursday even as authorities attributed these deaths to natural causes.

Ajay, an Aquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) patient succumbed to his ailment after he was admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital here Monday morning.

Jail spokesman Sunil Gupta said the victim had been lodged in jail in 2005 after a city court sentenced him to seven years imprisonment for having committed a murder.

"He was suffering from AIDS and died due to his illness. It was a natural death," said Gupta.

Harish, a Tihar jail inmate and drug addict was admitted to the same hospital Saturday evening with a complaint of stomachache. He died in the hospital Sunday morning.

Kanwaljeet, a 57-year-old diabetic prisoner, died Friday after a brief illness.

Jail officials said 23-year-old Amit died in the jail Thursday due to dehydration following excessive loss of liquids from his body. They added that the jail administration has ordered a mandatory enquiry into all the deaths.

However, Gupta ruled out any foul play. "All the victims died a natural death and Sub Divisional Magistrate is inquiring the matter," he said.
