"We could imagine selling the chair for charity on ebay or through some other suitable auction," Bernhard Glaess, head of marketing for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, told the weekend edition of the Ostsee newspaper based in the Baltic city of Rostock.

The beach chair was made in Germany's oldest factory still manufacturing the traditional wickerwork chairs that are a common feature along the beaches of the Baltic coastline.

The factory, based in Heringsdorf on the island of Usedom, used more than 2km of wicker, 35 square metres of blue-and-white cloth and a cubic metre of wood to make a chair big enough for the world's eight most powerful politicians.

The standard chair is built to take two people.
