Patna : Sanjay Rajak, a co-accused in the abduction of six-year-old Patna boy Ankit, surrendered in a court here Wednesday and has been remanded in police custody.
Rajak, in his late 20s, was evading arrest for nearly two months. He surrendered in the city judicial magistrate's court here. The court has remanded him in police custody for five days, said police officials.
Last month, the Patna police served a notice to Sanjay Rajak, who was at large, and asked him to appear before the city court "without fail within a month". Later, the police attached Rajak's properties including his house in Chapra district, about 150 km from here.
Two months after Ankit was abducted from outside his school here, his whereabouts are still unknown.
"We are fed up with repeated police assurances and promises to rescue Ankit. We have faith in God only. We hope a miracle might bring back my son," said Manoj Gope, Ankit's father.
Ankit, a lower Kindergarten student, was abducted on April 12 from outside St. Paul's School in Gaighat locality here. His father Manoj Kumar Gope is a small-time businessman who also runs a beauty parlour.
After Ankit's abduction case was highlighted in the media and protests rocked the city, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had asked top police officials to act seriously.
However, the boy remained untraced though the police arrested Balram Paswan, the main accused, last month. Paswan was a domestic servant at Ankit's house who had been missing after the boy's abduction.
More than 900 people have been abducted across the state in the first three months of 2007. According to officials, over 2,000 kidnappings occurred in the state in 2006 alone.
