Terming the meeting as "personal", Karan Singh told reporters he was "available if the nation wants" him for the highest constitutional post.

Asked if he was in the race for the top post, he said: "I am available if the nation needs me. It will be a great honour if I am chosen."

Before Karan Singh's arrival at the Tamil Nadu guesthouse, Karunanidhi had discussions with Left leaders after which he met both Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) allies have not yet reached a final decision over who would be their candidate in the presidential election, which is to take place July 19. The nominations open from Saturday.

However, it appears that during their discussions, the Congress and its allies have zeroed in on Home Minister Shivraj Patil and Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde.
