The mercury hit the 45-degree mark last weekend, making it one of the worst spells of any summer but rains lashed the national capital Friday and brought relief from the simmering heat. It continued to drizzle through the night in some parts of the city.

By Saturday morning, the city had received 65.3 mm of rainfall, brining the minimum temperature down to 23.5 degree Celsius from 28 degree Celsius Friday morning.

But for those hoping that the monsoons are here, there is some bad news. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) says the monsoons are not expected to hit the city before the month end.

"The rain is due to upper cyclonic circulation in Punjab, Haryana and Central Uttar Pradesh. Sporadic rainfall is likely to continue over the weekend," an IMD official said.

Though most residents welcomed the rains, commuters had a tough time due to traffic jams caused by water logging in many parts of the city.

"It was pouring when I was on my way to work. I had a tough time finding a rickshaw and when I finally managed to get one, I got stuck in a traffic jam because some cars were stranded in knee-high pools of water," complained Anupama Easwar, an advertising professional.
