The Daily Star, quoting the Chittagong Development Authority (CDA), Sunday said some 100,000 people out of 140,000 disadvantaged, mostly the poor, were living in 1,814 slums in the port city.

Of them, over 50,000 live in the slums situated at the risky slopes or bottom of hills where they rent rooms at cheaper rates but life safety is hardly taken into consideration there.

The series of landslides that buried over 100 people in Chittagong June 11 prompted CDA to identify areas to rehabilitate the disadvantaged people and to avert human disasters.
