Dhaka : The hangman may catch up with former Bangladesh Army major A.K.M. Mohiuddin Ahmed – one of those convicted for the assassination of the country's founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman – who has been deported from the US and is expected here Monday.
A US court decided on his deportation last Wednesday. It rejected the political asylum plea that he had been fighting for over 10 years, after entering America on a visitor's visa in 1996 and staying on illegally.
Two US Homeland Security officials are expected to escort him on a special flight here in the afternoon and hand him over to immigration officials. Security has been tightened at the Zia international airport.
Top secrecy shrouds the details of the extradition of the retired army major, who was tried in absentia and sentenced to death for his role in the murders of 28 people, including Sheikh Mujib and many of his family members on Aug 15, 1975.
The immigration department will shift the convict to the police, who will produce him in court.
Jail authorities said measures had been taken to keep Mohiuddin in a separate cell as a condemned prisoner, New Age newspaper reported Monday.
Foreign adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury told journalists Sunday that they had been informed of the deportation of Mohiuddin three days ago.
After losing his case in 2002, Mohiuddin had made several appeals and his family members had also approached Canada for asylum.
Mohiuddin was to be deported by March 30, which was postponed due to intervention by a Congressman.
Four of the convicts are now at the Dhaka Central Jail — lt. colonel (retired) Syed Faruque Rahman, Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Muhiuddin Ahmed and major (retired) Bazlul Huda. They appealed to the Appellate Division against the High Court's verdict but the case is pending with the Supreme Court for more than five years.
Of the fugitive convicts, Major Abdul Aziz Pasha has died while seven others, including Major Shariful Haque Dalim, are absconding.
