Ramallah : The Palestinian emergency government’s top priority will be regaining control over Gaza and ending the suffering of the population in the Strip, a Palestinian official said Sunday.

Nabil Amro, the Palestinian president’s political advisor, told reporters the emergency government of Prime Minister Salam Fayyadh, which was sworn in before President Mahmoud Abbas earlier Sunday, would be functioning in “very complicated circumstances.”

Lifting the siege on the Palestinians will be the second top priority for the emergency government, said Amro, who noted that the Palestinian people have suffered a lot.

Amro assured the people working for the Palestinian Authority in Gaza that they would be paid as usual.

There are good indications giving backing to the emergency government, he said, citing Arab and international recognition. “There is a former government in Gaza which struggles daily but without obtaining Arab nor international recognition,” said Amro in reference to the Hamas cabinet.

Saeb Erekat, chief Palestinian negotiator, also noted the difficult situation in the Palestinian territories. “We realise the difficult situation following the bloody coup in Gaza and the Palestine Authority losing power in Gaza,” said Erekat.

The Palestine Authority leadership emphasizes that Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem are on its geographic piece, he said.

Erekat said he was assigned by Abbas to coordinate with humanitarian organisations and the international diplomatic Quartet to help around 1.5 million Palestinians suffering harsh living conditions in the Gaza Strip.
