Aligarh :  Aligarh Muslim University Vice-Chancellor Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis, who assumed the office on June 11, has asked the University Grants Commission (UGC) for a special grant of Rupees one hundred crores for restoration of historical buildings and modernisation of the University.

The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development has earlier allotted special grants to three central universities that celebrated their 150th anniversary. Since Aligarh Muslim University is one of the oldest universities in India established by the Muslim community with a long heritage and cherished historical past, the Vice-Chancellor pointed out that, it was entitled to similar special grant from University Grants Commission to undertake a massive revival programme of the AMU's great legacy.
He raised the matter with UGC chairman Professor Sukhdeo Thorat during a meeting relating to the XIth Plan of the University. The UGC chairman was favourably disposed to his request, and asked Prof. Azis to submit a detailed proposal.

The Vice-Chancellor said that the Aligarh Muslim University would soon come up with a detailed blueprint for the restoration of AMU's historic buildings and modernisation of the infrastructure in the campus. He also laid stress on the need to upgrade the ICT facilities including 24 hours connectivity in the University campus.
