Cairo : Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Abul-Gheit on Saturday affirmed his country’s rejection of a US legislative bill to suspend scheduled US$200 million in military aid to the country.
The debate of the draft law by the US House of Representatives, late on Thursday, constituted “an unaccaptable intervention in the Egyptian domestic affairs,” Abul-Gheit said in a statement.
A committee of the House of Representatives had voted to withhold the US$ 200 million in a bid to press the Cairo government make some political reforms. The bill to become effective needed the signature of the US president.
US officials have been critical of the Cairo government firm policies vis-a-vis the political opposition and call for release of opposition figures from prison.
