The case was registered under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) at the Hari Nagar police station, close to the jail in west Delhi, on the directions of metropolitan magistrate inquiring the deaths of six inmates.

Earlier this month, Delhi's Lieutenant Governor Tejinder Khanna and the National Human Rights Commission had ordered separate probes following the deaths of six inmates within a week.

Jail authorities had then said that Harish Kumar, the inmate, and five others had succumbed to the exceptional heat wave the capital was witnessing.
