Lucknow : Two Indians accused of spying for Pakistan were arrested here Saturday with arms and ammunition, two days after two suspected Pakistan trained terrorists were caught from the city, police said.
Babu Bhai and Naushad, who allegedly worked for Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), were caught near the Residency, a monument in the heart of the city, a home department official told IANS.
The Special Task Force (STF), which made the arrests, seized an AK-47 rifle, a Chinese pistol and nine kg of RDX and large amounts of ammunition from them.
The arrests led the Uttar Pradesh administration to sound a red alert.
"We have reasons to believe that Uttar Pradesh is on ISI's target list. So we need to take necessary precaution," the official said.
Babu Bhai, 40, was described as a "very big catch". An STF spokesman said: "Babu Bhai is one of the top ISI agents in the country.
"He is a resident of Kolkata and is believed to be heading a Harkat-ul-Jehad-al-Islami (HUJI) module, detailed to carry out a series of blasts during the coming 'sawan melas' (monsoon fairs) in (Hindu) pilgrimage centres of the state."
The fairs draw huge crowds, particularly in Varanasi, Ayodhya and Garh Mukhteshwar.
Naushad hails from Bijnore and had been recruited by Babu Bhai to carry out "certain ISI missions" in the state, the official said.
"Like the two HUJI activists arrested Thursday, Naushad too received training in ISI camps in Pakistan," said the official.
Two suspected terrorists – Mohammad Yaqub and Nasir – were caught Thursday near the Lucknow railway station with seven kg RDX and detonators. Both had confessed to being trained in Pakistan.
