Kolkata : The US Consulate in Kolkata has begun an initiative to teach English in several small towns in West Bengal and will hold a two-day workshop from Monday.
The workshop on English Language Teaching will be held in Balurghat in South Dinajpur district of north Bengal.
Jennifer R. Crandall, a senior English Language Fellow who was formerly with the University of Denver in Colorado, will conduct the workshop. About 50 teachers from different schools in the district are expected to attend, a statement from the American Center in Kolkata said.
The Balurghat municipality is collaborating with the consulate in this programme. This is the first time that the US Consulate is holding such a workshop in a district town of north Bengal.
The workshop aims to focus on several aspects of teaching including "Language Learning and Learner Strategies", "Music Activities for the English Soul", and "Structured Controversial Dialogues for Enhancing Critical Thinking".
In order to involve participants more actively in the programme there will also be "Grammar Games".
The English Language Fellow (ELF) Program was inaugurated in eastern India in November 2005. It promotes English language learning around the world and fosters mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and other countries.
