Andy Murray aims for July return to tennis

London : Injured Andy Murray will spent this week in the gym trying to strengthen his right wrist in time for a return to tennis next month.

The eighth seed was forced to withdraw from Wimbledon on Sunday due to the problem, which he incurred on May 15 during a match in Hamburg. British number one Murray last won a match in March and missed the entire clay and grass seasons.

"Andy couldn't hit through his forehand and was still in pain," his mother and one-time coach Judy Murray told BBC on Monday.

"There was no point in going out at less than 100 per cent, that could only damage it further."

Judy Murray said that her 20-year-old son – whom doctors have said needs another ten days of rest – is hoping to be ready to play at the start of the North American hard court season on July 16 in Los Angeles.

"The most important part of the season for Andy is coming up. Hard courts are his best surface and he has a lot of points to defend," she added.

"Andy hopes to play LA and will spend the next week or so in the gym, but he will not hit a lot of tennis balls.

"The circuit is 11 months of the year and it's more important to be fit for the long term. Andy was desperate to play Wimbledon, but it was not worth the risk."
