Poll panel directs action against Jayalalitha

New Delhi : The Election Commission Tuesday asked Tamil Nadu's chief electoral officer to take action against former state chief minister and AIADMK chief J. Jayalalitha for violating the Representation of People's Act (RPA).

The order "comes in the wake of directives from the Madras High Court to this effect", Election Commission spokesman Rajesh Malhotra said.

Jayalalitha had filed nominations to contest from four constituencies during the 2001 state assembly elections, while the RPA permits a candidate to simultaneously contest from a maximum of two constituencies.

After DMK MP C.K. Kuppusamy petitioned the court, it had on June 13 directed the Election Commission to initiate appropriate action against Jayalalitha.

Following this, the poll panel sent a communiqué to Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta to direct the returning officers of the concerned constituencies "to file cases against her under the RPA", Malhotra said.
