New Delhi : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Wednesday arrested an excise inspector at Panchkula, in Haryana, while accepting a bribe of Rs.100,000 from a businessman for reducing his firm's tax amount.
Excise Inspector Rajinder Chawala was arrested after CBI laid a trap to nab him on a complaint filed by the businessman, who said he had received a notice from the central customs and excise department (Service Tax), imposing a service tax of Rs.470,000 on his firm, the investigating agency said in a statement here.
The businessman said as he approached the department to seek clarification over the imposition of the hefty tax, the inspector asked for a bribe of Rs.100,000 to reduce the tax amount.
Chawala subsequently told the agency that he was to share the bribe money with Excise Commissioner Gurmeet Singh, who was to be arrested.
After arresting the inspector, CBI sleuths searched the residences of Chawala and Singh and recovered a sum of Rs.160,000 from the latter's home.
CBI said it was also examining the collusion of an assistant excise commissioner in the incident, and seized several documents from his house for further action.
