London : The family of a young Sikh man who was murdered in a seafront brawl in Britain is planning to hold a special prayer meet this Sunday.
Harpal Sumon was 26 when he was fatally stabbed on July 8, 2006 in the Southend seafront after a night out with his brother Harpreet and best friend Paul Sandhu. Harpreet too sustained stab injuries. The killers were reported to have been heavily intoxicated with alcohol and cocaine.
The victim hailed from Holyport, a village in the English county of Berkshire where he lived with his parents, two sisters and Harpreet.
Last month, a crown court found Bardhyl Haziri, 28, an asylum seeker from Kosovo, guilty of Sumon's murder and sentenced him to a minimum of 19 years in prison. Another suspect, Sheptim Malka, 20, is still being hunted by police in connection with the incident and is suspected to be in Albania.
Sumon's family is planning to hold a special prayer meet just before his first death anniversary at the High Wycombe Sikh Temple in Buckinghamshire. All of the victim's friends have been invited regardless of their religion.
"The prayer due to take place Sunday is a traditional ceremony that Sikhs hold for one who has passed away. It is always held before the one year anniversary and it is an opportunity for us to show them that they are still remembered here," Sumon's sister Nikki told the Maidenhead Advertiser, a local newspaper.
