A police spokesman said the blasts took place at Gauripur town in western Assam's Dhubri district, about 290 km from the state's main city of Guwahati.

"The first explosion took place on the third floor of a building housing a photo studio and the second occurred just outside the house of a businessman," senior police official Bhupen Das told IANS by telephone from Gauripur.

The two buildings were partially damaged.

"There were no people around the sites of the explosions and hence there were no casualties," the official said.

Police blamed the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), a rebel group fighting for an independent homeland since 1979, for the two blasts.

"It could be a threat or attempt at creating panic in the area by the ULFA or some other elements. We are investigating the matter," Das said.
