Lucknow : Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati ordered the suspension of two doctors of the Meerut Medical College late Friday over their alleged refusal to carry out delivery of a HIV positive woman.
The doctors, including the acting head of department of gynaecology, were accused of gross dereliction of duty for failing to attend to the woman who was in an advanced state of pregnancy.
The woman's husband was forced to carry out the delivery at the hospital.
The incident came to light after it was telecast by a national TV network.
When the chief minister saw the news item she promptly ordered a probe.
The axe fell on Urmila Karya, lecturer in the gynaecology department, as well as acting head of department, Abhilasha Gupta, who were alleged to have refused point blank to carry out the delivery.
Recounting the delivery, the husband, Rahees Abbas, said: "The doctors came to the labour room and asked me to pull out the baby and then cut the umbilical cord. I followed their instructions and after that they asked me to clean up all the blood and burn the waste."
Sunita, who delivered a baby boy, said: "I was in pain but no doctor came forward. My baby could have died due to negligence of the hospital. They didn't even give any facility like blankets or food."
Abbas complained that after the birth of his baby, no doctor even asked about the "health of either the child or the mother".
