The explosion was of moderate strength, according to RNE.

No further details were immediately available.

Earlier, the airport had been evacuated after an unknown perpetrator threatened to detonate a bomb on the airport site.

Access to the airport remained closed and hundreds of travellers left the terminal on foot in the midst of a strong security operation launched by police and the Civil Guard.

Ibiza Airport, a leading destination for Spain's international tourism, had 307 flights carrying some 40,400 passengers scheduled Saturday, according to Aena, the agency that manages Spain's airports.

The person who warned of the supposed bomb attack called the Basque daily Gara, habitually used by the ETA terrorist organization for its communiqués.
