Managerial roundabout coming to a halt in Spain

By DPA

Madrid : The Spanish managerial roundup has almost come to a halt now, with most Liga clubs having found a coach for next season after a frenetic fortnight of hirings and firings.

Bernd Schuster is all set to take over from Fabio Capello at Real Madrid, after being released by club president Angel Torres from his Getafe contract.

Torres Friday allowed Schuster to leave the club, and according to AS newspaper, the Getafe president is lining up Michael Laudrup to replace the German.

Meanwhile Athletic Bilbao – the last first division club to choose their coach – are close to signing up former Deportivo la Coruna boss Joaquin Caparros, who has been replaced by Miguel Angel Lotina.

The digital version of Radio Marca said an agreement has been made by all the candidates in the forthcoming Bilbao presidential elections to offer the bench to Caparros.

Up the road in San Sebastian, Welshman Chris Coleman is all set to take charge at relegated Real Sociedad – after being recommended by former Sociedad boss John Toshack.

In Santander, meanwhile, Marcelino Garcia is taking up the reins, now that Miguel Angel Portugal has left to take up a backroom job at Real Madrid.

Garcia, who did so well last season at modest Recreativo Huelva, appeared certain last week to take charge at Real Betis, who had sacked Luis Fernandez a week before the end of the season.

But Garcia lost patience waiting for Betis to make an offer – and was quickly snapped up by Racing Santander.

Betis have had to cast around for alternatives to Garcia, and have decided on Hector Cuper, out of contract since being sacked by Mallorca two years ago.
