New Delhi : Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Naib Amir Maulana Muhammad Shafi Moonis has severely condemned the killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in a staged fake encounter followed by the killing of his wife Kauser Bi by senior police officers, calling the killings ‘brutal and barbaric', and called upon the government at the Centre to order a high level enquiry into all such cases of police excesses and encounters in the name of combating terror.

"If fair and impartial high level enquiries are conducted, there is a strong possibility that many cases of killings in the name of combating terrorism, like Sohrabuddin's, will come to be proved as fake encounter killings," the Jamaat leader opined in a statement released here Wednesday.

Maulana Moonis demanded that the government initiate high level probe into all cases of police encounters spread over years of persecution of minorities, "so that the excesses and atrocities perpetrated by police and paramilitary personnel might come to light and those who have been unduly killed or languishing behind the bars in fake and concocted cases for years together might get justice."

The Jamaat leader urged the government to take effective measures that can bring to light the reality of so-called terror-combating cases and the persons detained therein in Gujarat and Maharashtra, pave the way for the release of innocent prisoners and subject the erring police officers to due punishment.

He also demanded due compensation for the relations of those killed in the name of combating terror as well as those detained in concocted cases.
