The Foreign Office in London said Tuesday that political directors in the foreign ministries of the US, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany, would have an evening meeting along with EU officials following the recent talks between the EU and Tehran.

A Foreign Office spokesman said in a statement: “This is part of a pattern of discussions on how we move forward.”

EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana recently held talks in Turkey with the senior Iranian official dealing with the nuclear issue, Ali Larajani.
Solana called on the US following the meeting to speak directly to Iran to ease the crisis.

Iran has insisted all the time that its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes aimed at generating electricity, but the West suspects it is trying to develop nuclear weapons.

The UN has recently stepped up targeted sanctions on Iran with the aim of persuading Tehran to stop enriching uranium.
