Thailand unshaken by US priority watch list

By NNN-TNA,

Bangkok : Thailand’s Commerce Minister Krirkkrai Jirapaet on Monday pledged to go ahead with amendments to the Wholesale and Retail Business Act and the Foreign Business Act although Thailand is placed on the United States’ intellectual property “priority watch list.’’

The US administration had placed 12 countries, including Thailand, on its “priority watch list” for failure to sufficiently protect American producers of music, movies and other copyrighted material from widespread piracy.

Mr Krirkkrai said the Washington’s move was understandable and should be seen as its own discretion.

Likewise, Thailand would decide on various issues including the amendments to the Wholesale and Retail Act and the Foreign Business Act based on righteousness, and the country’s interest.

He said the Thai government’s move to amend both Acts was made for the benefit of the country and based on mutual fairness.

Whether the US government would take the issues into account for further actions depended on its discretion, Mr Krirkkrai added.
