Washington : The United States State Department has commended Morocco’s efforts in fighting terrorism, noting that such efforts have been tightened following the terrorist attacks that hit Casablanca in May 2003.
In its annual “Country Report on Terrorism 2006,” issued on Monday, the State Department said many terrorist groups had been identified and dismantled in Morocco last year. It also paid tribute to the kingdom’s measures related to terrorism funding and money laundering.
The 312-page report highlighted Morocco’s measures in the religious field with a view to countering “the extremism ideology and promoting principles of moderation and tolerance,” including the programme to train 50 Morshidates (female preachers), which endeavours to improve the human capital in religious preaching.
The report also noted the introduction of a TV programme network to transmit religious conferences and sermons in 2,000 mosques throughout the kingdom.
The State Department’s report also hailed the large-scale anti-poverty “National Initiative for Human Development” as a means to fight poverty, create jobs and promote infrastructures.
“Morocco’s reforms aim to improve the socio-economic conditions for Moroccans,” the report said.
