New Delhi : Dark clouds, dust storms and light showers brought relief to the national capital Sunday afternoon just as the summer sun was beginning to spread its scorching warmth.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the capital recorded a maximum of 39.1 degrees Celsius Sunday. But the strong northerly winds, which swept the city at a speed of 72 km per hour around mid afternoon, brought down the temperature by more than seven degrees.

"The temperature, thanks to the strong winds, has come down to 31 degrees Celsius. Now with the rains the temperature will further drop by a couple of more degrees," said an IMD official.

Obviously pleased with the weather change, most people made quick outdoor plans to enjoy the weather.

"Seeing the bright sunlight early in the morning I and my wife decided to go for a movie and stay out of the heat. But now the weather has made us change our plans. We are going for a long drive and probably enjoy a cup of tea at a roadside stall," said Arijit Sen, a resident of north Delhi's Model Town.

"We are going to India Gate," said Aparna, a college student. "It's too beautiful a weather to miss by sitting inside. With our exams over, the pleasant weather in the middle of summer is a treat for us," added her friend.
