The Surrey Ambulance Service said the accident occurred at 2.15 a.m. when two vehicles collided on the motorway M25 in Surrey.

It is believed that a recovery vehicle, which had a broken down minibus on the back, collided with the rear end of a lorry. The mini bus passengers were also sitting in the cab of the recovery vehicle.

All the victims had been travelling with the minibus, a spokesman for the service said. A man, also travelling with those from the minibus, was taken to hospital with "multiple and possibly life-threatening" injuries.

A section of the highway was closed following the accident.
