MPM advertising agency, which was appointed by the Brazilian Football Federation to coordinate the campaign, said the bank bought one of three available slots on the project for 4.5 million reais (about $2.3 million).

Itau did not immediately confirm the information. MPM said the bank would now have the right to include the Brazilian campaign's logo in its publicity efforts.

MPM said the move puts Itau at an advantage to become a regional sponsor for the 2014 World Cup if FIFA chooses Brazil as the host country.
