At around 06:00 a.m. (local time), elements of the Marine Battalion Landing Team 1 engaged an undetermined number of MNLF militants in Kambing village in Kalingalan Caluang town, GMA TV quoted Armed Forces information chief Bartolome Bacarro as saying.

The bodies of the four slain rebels and an M14 rifle were recovered by operating troops, Bacarro said.

The MNLF signed a peace agreement with the Philippine government on September 2, 1996 for the establishment of the so-called "genuine, comprehensive, and lasting" political autonomy in Mindanao.
