Tourist arrivals up 13 percent this year

New Delhi : India received 1.76 million tourists during the first four months of this year as against 1.55 million in the corresponding period last year and 1.36 million in 2005.

The foreign exchange earned also went up to $2.61 billion during the period under review from $2.25 billion during the comparable period of 2006 and $1.95 billion of 2005, an official statement said.

Even though the growth rate in tourist arrivals dropped from 14.4 percent in the first four months of 2006 to 13.1 percent in the corresponding period of 2007, foreign exchange earnings was up 16.4 percent as against 15.1 percent in 2006.
