Havana : Subversive attempts by the US have increased dramatically in Cuba, a senior investigative officer here has said.
Manuel Hevia, the director of the Historic Investigation Centre of the department of State Security, Monday said starting with the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, the US Interests Section in Havana has boosted spying and preparation of internal counter-revolutionary groups.
Over 540 US officials visited Havana between 1998 and 2000 and of them, 30 percent were identified as suspected intelligence agents, said Hevia.
According to the expert, the approval of the 1992 Torricelli Act by George Bush senior not only provoked hunger, lack of medicine, transportation and electricity, but also encouraged massive flow of emigres to the US.
Between 1987 and 1994, Washington only granted seven percent of 160,000 visas agreed with Cuba, encouraging illegal exits along with the 1996 Cuban Adjustment Act that gave special privileges to the island's emigres.
