New Delhi : In an effort to provide each village in the country with basic sports facilities, the government will soon have a comprehensive sports policy, according to Sports Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar.
"With a view to rectifying the present state of affairs, the ministry has been directed to prepare a Comprehensive Sports Policy," Aiyar said in parliament Wednesday.
"This policy will address fundamental issue of making sports and games facilities available to the overwhelming majority of youth, adolescents and children of our country who have hitherto had no or little access to organised games and sports facilities at grass root level in villages and urban India," he added.
Aiyar said the policy would also address the question of integration of sports and physical education with formal education system.
"It is only through this board-basing sport in the country, that it will be possible to promote excellence in sports in a scientific and well coordinated manner, spotting and nurturing talent form early childhood onwards," he said.
The minister also announced that the government would also introduce a nationwide programme 'Panchayat Yuva Krida aur Yuva Abhiyan', which will be aimed at providing basic sports infrastructure and popularising and promoting sports at the grassroots level.
