Two mauled by leopard in Guwahati

Guwahati : Two people were mauled, one of them critically, by a leopard after the cat strayed out of the forest and entered Assam's main city of Guwahati, wildlife officials said.

A forest department official said the full-grown male leopard was roaming in a densely populated area in Guwahati before entering a house late Wednesday.

"The leopard entered a house and attacked a man. Local people somehow managed to drag the man out and shut the door with the animal inside," Narayan Mahanta, a wildlife warden, told IANS here.

Police said another person was also injured in the attack though he was out of danger. "The person who was seriously injured is now battling for life at a hospital with multiple wounds," a senior police official said.

The leopard was later tranquillised by a veterinarian.

"The animal was injured with locals beating it up with sticks. We are keeping the leopard under observation at the Guwahati zoo," Mahanta said. The warden said the cat probably entered the city in search of food from a nearby hillock.

In February too, a leopard had mauled three people in the city.
