New Delhi : Clouds, dust storms and heavy showers for the second consecutive day coupled with hail lashed the capital Friday evening, bringing down the summer temperature by over 14 degrees Celsius.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the rain started at around 8.00 p.m. and stopped within 25 minutes. However, strong winds, which swept the city at a speed of 54 km per hour, brought 25.1 mm rain in that short period.
"It rained heavily but for a very short duration. Upper air cyclone circulation over central parts of Rajasthan brought hail and squall in the city," said a met official.
The temperature was 34 degrees Celsius in the afternoon but plummeted to 20 degrees after the rain. On Friday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 40.1 degrees Celsius.
The change of weather delighted the residents of the city even though the squall resulted in the uprooting of several trees, traffic jams and flooding in many places.
"We are going to India Gate," said Bhumika, a college student. "It's too beautiful a weather to miss by sitting inside. With our exams over, the pleasant weather in the middle of summer is a treat for us," added her friend.
The city had received freak showers coupled with squall late Thursday evening, bringing down the temperature by over 5 degrees Celsius.
