Thiruvananthapuram : Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan received a death threat over telephone from Saudi Arabia early Monday, prompting tightening of his security cover.
According to the chief minister's office, the threat was received over telephone at the police headquarters in Kozhikode early morning. It said Achuthanandan would be killed in 24 hours.
The threat is believed to be linked to the tough stand taken by Achuthanandan on illegal encroachments by the tourist resort mafia in Munnar in Idukki district.
A large team of police and forest officials are overseeing the demolition of buildings on encroached forest land in Munnar since the past two days.
However, the chief minister is carrying on with his normal duties as usual.
"None of his public programmes are going to be cancelled," said the press secretary to Achuthanandan.
State Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said the threat was being taken up very seriously and everything would be done to find the people behind the call.
"The intelligence wing of Kerala Police has been entrusted the probe into the matter," the home minister told reporters.
According to reports, the demolition team in Munnar is to raze more than 200 resorts that have encroached upon government land.
