Islamabad : One soldier was killed and eight people were injured Monday as security forces and suspected Islamic militants clashed in the town of Tank in north-western Pakistan, local media reported.

Suspected insurgents hurled hand grenades at a check post of the Frontier Corps in the town's main market, killing the soldier and wounding another, a local official told the Aaj television channel.

Security forces and militants later exchanged fire with heavy weapons in different parts of the city, injuring seven civilians.

Located in South Waziristan in the restive border area with Afghanistan, Tank has suffered serious attacks in recent weeks. Hundreds of militants mounted rocket and mortar strikes on banks, a paramilitary compound, a college and government offices last month, killing at least two dozen people.

The government responded by imposing a curfew that was lifted only last week.
