Kari Devi, 45, of Dhansir village in Gaya district, about 100 km from here, was Friday beaten severely by former village head Saroj Singh and his relatives who suspected her of stealing their cow.

She was admitted to a government hospital in serious condition and died Saturday, Gaya Superintendent of Police Amit Jain said Sunday.

Over 250 Dalits protested her death by blocking a national highway, demanding the arrest of the accused.

"We pleaded that she was innocent but Singh and his relatives attacked her and beat her till she lost her consciousness," said Kurchi Manjhi, the woman's husband.

According to villagers, one of Singh's cows was missing from a field and he suspected that Kari Devi stole it.

The accused are absconding. A police complaint has been lodged.
