Kolkata : A major tragedy was averted Monday with officials recovering four bombs from a local train in West Bengal's Howrah station.
Howrah Superintendent of Railway Police P.K. Sanyal said four improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in large tin boxes were found in the Tarakeshwar local train halting at Howrah station at around 10.30 a.m.
"We have already defused two bombs and two are being defused. Investigations are on," Sanyal told IANS.
The bombs were taken to an isolated area on the banks of the Ganges and then defused.
In November last year, several people died in a blast that rocked a passenger train in north Bengal, three months after the Mumbai train bombings in July 2006 claimed over 200 lives.
Explosives were recovered from a local train in Howrah a few months ago.
